Finstown Substation

We’re pleased to be supporting BAM UK & Ireland with all structural concrete elements on the Finstown Substation project, located on the Orkney Islands. This marks a significant step forward for Murform, building on several years of collaboration with BAM across various substation and infrastructure projects. The substation is a critical component of SSEN’s proposed transmission reinforcement from Orkney to the mainland, which is required to support the growth of renewable electricity generators across Orkney looking to connect to the main GB transmission system. A subsea cable will connect at Dounreay, making this project vital to the future of clean energy integration in the region.

Our continued partnership with BAM will see us contributing to SSEN’s ambitious programme to upgrade the network infrastructure throughout the north of Scotland.

Given the island location, logistics have been an exciting challenge, our teams have been mobilising using planes, boats, and everything in between to access the site.

The team has made an impressive start, completing the first 140m³ concrete pour for the 132kV GIS basement floor during their initial rotation. Outstanding effort from everyone involved.

Looking ahead, we’ll be constructing the foundations for eight large buildings, primarily focused on the electrical equipment bases within each.

Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses.
